Dehydration looks different at each age

  • Set a phone reminder for Grandma/Grandpa at 10 AM and 3 PM — pair with TV show or medication times
  • Offer water in smaller glasses (150 ml) to seniors — higher acceptance rate than 300 ml glasses
  • Pair hydration with meds: 'take your pill with a full glass, not a sip'
  • Use urine colour check by 3 PM for the whole household — pale straw = fine

Why do grandparents drink less water as they age?

Two things change. The thirst signal blunts measurably after age 65 — older adults can be 2% dehydrated and feel fine. And kidney concentration drops, so more water is lost for the same fluid input. A 75-year-old needs roughly the same water as a 45-year-old but will ask for half as much.

My dad refuses to drink more because of bathroom trips — what do I do?

Front-load: more of the day's water before 5 PM, less after. Use 150 ml glasses not 300 ml ones so each serving feels smaller. Many seniors will accept 8 small glasses but refuse 4 big ones. Incontinence is a real concern — the right answer is a conversation with their doctor, not dehydration.

Can kids and grandparents share the same hydration routine?
