Accessibility

Vari is designed to be usable by everyone. We believe hydration tracking should be accessible regardless of ability, and we build with assistive technology in mind from the start — not as an afterthought.

Supported features

VoiceOver

Supported

Every screen in Vari is fully navigable with VoiceOver. All buttons, inputs, sliders, and selection controls have descriptive labels, hints, and roles. You can complete the entire flow — from onboarding to logging drinks to viewing your history — using gestures, keyboard, or braille display.

Larger Text

Supported

Vari supports Dynamic Type up to 200% scaling. All text in the app uses our semantic typography system with allowFontScaling enabled and a maximum font size multiplier of 2.0x, ensuring readability at every size without breaking layouts.

Dark Mode

Supported

Vari automatically adapts to your system appearance setting. Our full dark color palette reduces eye strain in low-light conditions while maintaining sufficient contrast for all text and interactive elements.

Differentiate Without Color

Supported

Key information in Vari is never conveyed by color alone. Goal progress uses both a filled ring and a numeric percentage. Calendar day indicators use shape (dots) alongside color. Badge states use icons (lock, checkmark) in addition to color coding.

Sufficient Contrast

Supported

All text and interactive elements in Vari meet WCAG AA contrast guidelines — 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text and UI components. Our design token system enforces these ratios across both light and dark themes.

Reduced Motion

Supported

Vari respects your device's Reduce Motion setting. When enabled, spring animations are replaced with simpler transitions, and the confetti celebration effect is suppressed. All haptic feedback continues to work normally.

How we build accessibly

Every interactive element in Vari has an accessibilityLabel, accessibilityRole, and where applicable, accessibilityHint and accessibilityState. This includes all 28 screens across onboarding, daily tracking, history, insights, settings, and authentication.

Our design system uses semantic typography (13 variants from Display Large to Caption 2), a 4pt spacing grid, and a token-based color system that enforces contrast ratios at the design-token level — not per-screen.

Buttons enforce a minimum touch target of 44×44 points per Apple Human Interface Guidelines. Bottom sheets use drag-to-dismiss with backdrop tap for motor accessibility. All confirmation dialogs are presented as bottom sheets (not system alerts) with clear primary and cancel actions.

What we’re working on

  • Full Voice Control optimization (currently partially supported via VoiceOver compatibility)
  • Dynamic Type testing at AX-XXL sizes across all screens
  • Comprehensive WCAG AA contrast audit with automated tooling
  • Screen-reader optimized data visualizations for the Flow Score chart and history calendar
